Basheeba Worlotoe

Basheeba is getting the hang of swimming at last. April 2012

Basheeba (7) at Orion Bay in East London, Eastern Cape, where the children had a whale of a time. They saw fish, ate fish, and met a preserved coelacanth in the extremely interesting East London Museum.

Basheeba Worlotoe, a 6-year old girl from Sinoe County, Liberia, who suffered severe burns as a 3-year old and was treated inadequately by the local doctors. Aside from the scarring she also has severely restricted mobility in her right arm.
Putu Iron Ore contacted Children of Fire to see if we could assist the child.

In late August 2010 we received an email from Liberia, West Africa, asking if we could help a six year old burned girl called Basheeba Worlotoe. As some people estimate that there are only 40 doctors total in the country, the chances of her receiving plastic surgery within Liberia are nil. There are only private clinics in the capital Monrovia.

Yellow Fever is a significant problem in Liberia but there have been widespread vaccination campaigns, so there is good chance that the child might be protected already.

Basheeba lives with her father Tommy, her mother Catherine and four brothers under the age of 13 years old in Kieh's Town, Sinoe County. Kieh's Town is located next to Jalay's Town and next to the only national park in the country Sapo National Park. Jalay's town is where the Forestry Development Authority, in charge of managing the national park, has its park headquarters.

An employee of Fauna & Flora International that is also based in Jalay's town, is prepared to assist with returning Basheeba to her home town, if she comes to South Africa for surgery.
